“Court watch programs are essential in promoting judicial accountability and ensuring fair treatment for all individuals. By placing trained observers in courtrooms, these programs enhance transparency and discourage bias, misconduct, or abuse of authority. When judges know they are being observed, they are more likely to follow legal procedures and treat litigants with dignity.
Court watchers document patterns of judicial behavior, providing evidence of bias or unfair treatment, especially for marginalized individuals. This data can be crucial for identifying issues and advocating for reforms.
My experience on the bench has reinforced the importance of citizen oversight in holding our justice system accountable, particularly in local courts that often lack sufficient oversight. New Jersey Court Watchers are addressing this challenge by restoring public voice and upholding the standards our courts should meet.”

Citizens Keeping Courts Accountable
New Jersey Court Watch is dedicated to upholding accountability in the courts. Our organization relies on volunteers, subscribers, and advocates who are committed to ensuring that courts operate with courtesy and fairness. We achieve this by deploying trained volunteers to monitor and report on court proceedings, a practice commonly known as court watch programs. These programs involve advocates and community members systematically observing court proceedings, recording their observations, and making the results public. By bringing the community's voice into the courthouse, we adopt a collaborative, community-based approach. On a broader scale, New Jersey Court Watch has the potential to drive systemic change by exposing injustices and indignities that would otherwise go unnoticed. It's important to note that New Jersey Court Watchers do not monitor legal issues or court procedural decisions; rather, we watch to hold courts accountable for treating the public, litigants, and lawyers with dignity, respect, and fairness. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that courts are accountable for their conduct and treatment of every individual, irrespective of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or language. Our focus is on promoting court accountability through public accountability, particularly for the often overlooked, most vulnerable, and voiceless members of the community. New Jersey Court Watch volunteers are trained to observe and take notes, as well as compile data on the words and actions of judges, attorneys, prosecutors, accusers, and the accused. The primary intent of the Court Watch program is to promote transparency, accountability, and community participation in courtrooms across the state.
TRANSPARENCY
When citizens observe court proceedings, it discourages bias, corruption, and misconduct. Judges, prosecutors, and other courtroom actors are more likely to act ethically when they know the public is watching
ACCOUNTABILITY
Court watch programs provide a check on judicial power. Observers can report patterns of injustice, such as racial disparities, harsh sentencing, or disregard for due process.
ENURES FAIR TREATMENT
Public presence in the courtroom helps ensure that defendants—especially those without resources—are treated fairly and that their constitutional rights are respected.
COMMUNITY
EMPOWERMENT
These programs give ordinary people a role in the justice system. Citizens become informed and engaged, strengthening democratic oversight of the judiciary.
PROMOTE
JUDICIAL INTEGRITY
Judges and lawyers who act with integrity have nothing to hide. Court watch helps build trust in those who uphold the law and exposes those who don’t.
